The All American Hamburger

The universal meal

The hamburger, or just "burger" for short, is a hot sandwich made with a ground beef patty placed inside a bread bun often served with other condiments such as lettuce, bacon, tomato, onion, pickles, cheese, mayonnaise, mustard, as well as many other wonderful items you can't even imagine. As you might imagine, the hamburger has become a worldwide staple in our meals.

As for the beginning of the hamburger, there are probably as many theories as there are types of burgers. It does seem to have originated back in the 15th century in Europe. At first it was more of a more like a steak than chopped beef. It wasn't until 1829 when the "meat cutter" was invented.

It would also appear the first hamburger on an American menu was fat Delmonico's in New York in 1826. The first Texas hamburger seems to have been sold at a café in Athens, Texas during the late 1880s. In 1921 the hamburger reached a new level when the White Castle restaurant chain marketed a small two and a half-inch hamburgers known as sliders. Then in 1940 McDonald's upped the level one more time and has since sold billions of them.

The hamburger today generally is usually served as informal meal either cooked in the backyard are ordered from fast-food or casual establishments. Not all hamburgers are 100% beef. Many are prepared with such additional ingredients as eggs, breadcrumbs and Italian seasonings. The most common additions are salt and pepper as well as parsley, onions, thousand Island dressing, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce and other spices.

If you can think of an ingredient, it is probably been added to the hamburger. Interesting additions have been pineapple slices, avocados and extremely hot peppers.. Hamburger is so well accepted, it is served in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan as well as most other countries of the world.

Hamburgers can be made of 100% ground beef or a mixture with sausage. One of the most expensive hamburgers are made from Kobe beef.
