The All American Hamburger

When you want the real thing.

We all know that the hamburger was "invented" in the United States and has evolved into things we would never have considered at the time.  Regardless, here is the original one!

1 1/2 pounds ground chuck (80 percent lean)

  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • yellow mustard
  • mayonnaise
  • iceberg lettuce
  • sweet white onions
  • pickles
  • relish
  • salt
  • freshly ground black pepper

Divide the ground chuck into 4 equal portions and make each portion into a 3/4-inch-thick burger.  A Secret: Make a deep depression in the center with your thumb - this keeps the juices from collecting in the middle and swelling the hamburger. Season both sides of each burger with salt and pepper.

Heat your grill to high. Grill the burgers until golden brown and slightly charred on the first side. Flip the burgers. Cook burgers until golden brown and slightly charred on the second side.  Use an instant read meat thermometer to know when to remove the burgers from the fire.

Move to a cooler side of the grill and add the cheese.  While the cheese is melting, place the buns on the grill and toast.  Remove the bottom bun, place a patty on it.  Place the top buns on the plate.

Add whatever you wish to your hamburger from the selection above, top with the top toasted bun and dig in.
